What's Different?
Drawn from the experiences of Autism Connections, AUSUM 2020 is the first of its kind conference that addresses issues special needs families need to know. From IEP and special needs trusts to PASSÉ, we've got it all covered.
There is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of peer- mediated supports in the classroom for students with disabilities. This presentation will cover results of research on peer-mediated interventions, different types of peer-mediated strategies, and potential benefits of these strategies for students with and without disabilities.
Special Education and Alternative Dispute Resolution
Presenter: Tiffany Tackett-Kell
This presentation will cover the overview of IEPs and 504s, behavioral assessments and BIPS (behavioral intervention plans) and ADR in special education cases.
PASSÉ Group Panel Discussion
Presenter: Arkansas PASSÉ Group
PASSÉ stands for Provider-led Arkansas Shared Savings Entity. Providers (like a physician, pharmacist, etc.) have entered into partnerships with each other along with an experienced organization that performs administrative functions similar to insurance companies. There will be a general discussion on how the PASSÉ operates and how members receive support from the PASSÉs and a Q&A to follow.
Special Needs Trusts and Guardianships
Presenter: Michael Chastain
A special needs trust is a type of trust created for the benefit of someone with a disability. It is irrevocable, meaning it cannot be canceled, and the assets are not subject to creditors or lawsuits. The benefit of special needs planning comes in the future when a caregiver dies or is no longer able to provide care to the disabled individual for whatever reason. The benefits will be discussed. Guardianship is a tool to be considered only when a person cannot, because of age or mental limitations, make competent decisions regarding his/her own affairs.
