He, along with so many others, have worked countless days, weeks and years to get Will to where he is today. Kris will talk about the reality of parenting a child with severe autism, how it was navigated successfully, and the bumps along the way! It is important that ALL young people learn about their developing bodies, relationships, wellness needs, and increased autonomy. This session will provide an overview of evidence based information, strategies, and resources to support family members, caregivers, educators, therapists, and other professionals in teaching specific social, wellness, and self-determination skills as part of sexuality and relationship education. The session will help participants learn how to find, set up, and implement instruction that is both developmentally appropriate and age respective. Topics covered include personal hygiene, going to the doctor, personal space, healthy relationships, body changes during puberty, communication with others, personal safety, the concepts of public versus private, consent, and choice making.
